Allt sedan Thomas Jefferson skrev på den amerikanska konstitutionen har landet kallats “det amerikanska experimentet” – en plats där idéer testas och förfinas. Inför USA:s 250-årsjubileum 4 juli 2026 har fotograf Henry Arvidsson arbetat med projektet The American Experiment.

“American Experiment” är en titt utifrån, med något av en insiders kännedom, på en nation som grundats på parlamentarisk demokrati. Ett tvåhundrafemtio årigt nationellt experiment startat av revolutionärer som förnekat det Brittiska kungadömet för “liv, frihet och strävan efter lycka” och en konstitution med aspirationer på att vara det bästa mänskligheten åstadkommit. Ur detta skapades en nation där individen stod i centrum, en militär som blev världens mäktigaste och en ekonomi som växte till världens största. “Huset på kullen” är än idag för många en plats att se upp till. Vägen dit har kantats av interna och externa stridigheter, mänskliga orättvisor och felsteg. Men man har också vågat, chansat och dedicerat resurser för att nå tidigare ouppnåeliga mål. Henry Arvidsson har sedan 1987 bott, rest och fotograferat i USA. Driven av nyfikenhet och en vilja att med egna ögon se varför USA har varit så dominant under hans liv, har han besökt 35 delstater och två besittningar. I samband med USAs 250 årsdag 2026 har han summerat sina observationer i projektet “American Experiment” vilket är tänkt som en utställning och (möjligen) en 256 sidors bok.

Ever since Thomas Jefferson drafted the US Constitution, the country has been called “the American experiment” – a place where ideas are tested and refined. In anticipation of the 250th anniversary of the USA on July 4, 2026, have the photographer Henry Arvidsson been working on the project The American Experiment.

"American Experiment” is an outsider’s look, with something of an insider’s knowledge, at a nation founded on parliamentary democracy. A two hundred and fifty-year national experiment started by revolutionaries who rejected the British monarchy for “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” and a constitution with aspirations to be the best that humanity has ever achieved. From this was created a nation where the individual was at the center, a military that became the world’s most powerful and an economy that grew to be the world’s largest. “The house on the hill” is still a place for many to look up to today. The road there has been marked by internal and external strife, human injustices and missteps. But people have also dared, taken chances and dedicated resources to reach previously unattainable goals. Henry Arvidsson has lived, traveled and photographed in the USA since 1987. Driven by curiosity and a desire to see with his own eyes why the USA has been so dominant during his life, he has visited 35 states and two possessions. In connection with the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026, he has summarized his observations in the project “American Experiment”, which is intended as an exhibition and (possibly) a 256-page book.
